Deseronto is named after the man who led the Mohawks to this part of the world: Deserontyon, also known as Captain John. Deserontyon took an active part in the American Revolutionary War, fighting for the British.
Eleanor Herrington published an article in the Bulletin of the Departments of History and Political and Economic Science in Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada in 1921 which contains a detailed history of Captain John and the early years of the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte: Captain John Deserontyou and the Mohawk Settlement at Deseronto [PDF, 16MB].
There is also a biography of Deserontyon in the Canadian Dictionary of Biography.
