I’m hoping these questions will be easy ones for Deseronto folk to answer. This photograph was received at the Archives this week, but without any supporting information to explain who the hockey team were, or when the picture was taken. The firm sponsoring the team, Sam’s Aluminum, was established in Napanee in 1963, so that gives us the earliest possible date for the photo. It became Sam’s Doors and Windows in 1971 (according to the company’s website), which presumably gives us the latest possible date.

So, over to you, citizens of Deseronto and surrounding areas:

  1. What is the name of the hockey team?
  2. What year was the photo taken?
  3. Do you recognise any of the players or the men in the photo?

No prizes available for correct answers, but any assistance will be gratefully received!

Libraries and archives are magical places and yesterday I found the proof. Library staff and volunteers at Deseronto Public Library (where the Archives is based) were busy converting ordinary rabbit food into Magical Reindeer Food for distribution to the children attending Deseronto’s Santa Claus Parade.

The parade starts at 11.00am on Saturday November 24, so if you are worried about whether Santa’s reindeer will visit your home this Christmas, you know where to come…

Inside this special package is a treat but not for you! It contains magical reindeer food and here is what you do. Sprinkle this magical reindeer food carefully on the ground. And tonight if you are lucky Santa's reindeer will come around. But here's a secret I have to tell, one you must try to keep. That Santa's reindeer only come when you are fast asleep so quickly put your jammies on and get a story read. Then sprinkle this magic treat outside and hurry off to bed!

A recent accession from the Town of Deseronto included this certificate of Public Recognition which was designed to honour those returning from overseas service after World War II.

If you look closely at the document (click on the image to see a bigger version), you will see that the town mentioned is Halifax and the crests are those for Halifax (as it was before 1964) and Nova Scotia. Pencilled annotations state ‘Your crest here’ and ‘Ontario crest here’ and the name Deseronto has been pencilled in next to the main block of text, where it would replace the word Halifax.

What is not clear from the certificate is whether the Town went ahead and ordered their own version of the certificate for servicemen returning to Deseronto. Did any Deseronto veterans receive such a thing? Has anyone seen a certificate like this among the papers of a friend or relative?

Deseronto Public School pupils, 1957We’ll be posting information, images and stories from the Deseronto Archives on this site as a way of sharing the activities of the Archives beyond the confines of the Archives Room.

Back at the end of September the Archives was involved in putting together a small display in the Deseronto Public Library as part of the Town’s celebration of the 50th anniversary of the opening of Deseronto Public School. Many visitors enjoyed finding photographs of themselves, their friends and siblings in the display. We are always pleased to find more class photos of Deseronto school in years gone by, so if you have any, please consider getting in touch with the archives so that we can keep a copy for posterity!
