Matthew Corby signed up in Picton on this day in 1916. He was born in Northport, Prince Edward County on August 3rd, 1899 (according to the 1901 census – he stated August 4th, 1897 on his attestation form), the son of Adam Corby and Ellen (née Brant), who were both Mohawks. In 1911 the family were living in Tyendinaga.
Corby joined the 80th Battalion with the regimental number 220497. He was five feet two and a half inches tall, with a dark complexion, brown eyes and black hair.
Matthew Corby’s service record shows that he went absent without leave on March 14th, 1916 and was struck off as a deserter the following month. In 1921 he was living with his mother in Prince Edward County.
